ARE CHRISTMAS ADS AND HUMOUR COMPATIBLE?

Christmas is coming, we will be back to our romantic movies, hot chocolates, family reunions and of course, the Christmas ads.

I've been watching some of this year's Christmas ads, and I've been wondering about their added touch of humour.

Indeed, it has been proven that humour in TV commercials helps to create a bond with the viewers by putting them in a good atmosphere, allowing them to feel good, which would ultimately help the memorization of the commercial and would lead the audience to buy the brand's products resulting in an efficient advertising campaign.

This humour is even more important during the Christmas period as it will help children to remember the advert and then talk to their parents about it!

In addition, it brings authenticity to the brand, which is a value highly sought after by Generation Z, and we indeed like humour.

The Marks and Spencer advert is childlike, featuring a Percy Pig who is animated and talking. The "rude" line from the fairy also makes us smile:

The Lidl advert is different: it shows the same scene of a family dinner three times in a row, but always more futuristic. The future is portrayed funnily, with for example the outfits, the talking dog, the self-cutting meat and the new way of taking pictures:

The TK Maxx advert features a young man performing at his school concert. Looking at his funny shoes, he decides to change the song he was supposed to play to an Aerosmith song, the audience is first surprised by this originality but then has fun:

I asked some of my friends what they thought of Christmas ads.

Most of them prefer funny adverts and think that these adverts should also be attractive to children and sell them dreams while keeping the spirit of exchange and sharing of Christmas.

"I remember well the toy ads: SOS Ouistiti, Elefun... I loved watching them when I was younger, they made me laugh and I always wanted to buy the toys afterwards!"

Ilario, 20 years old

However, it also came out in our conversations that you have to know how to dose the humour in the ads as it can easily become awkward.

"Humour is good, but it can quickly become awkward and

when it's forced, you can see it directly"

Auriane, 20 years old

I think that the TK Maxx, Lidl and Marks And Spencer's commercials have managed to be funny, with a good dose of humour, and that they appeal to children

Most of the friends I asked also told me that the Christmas adverts that made the biggest impression on them were by far the Coca Cola ones. These ads are indeed very popular: some are funny, others are more emotional and others speak a lot to children thanks to Santa Claus and toys. In my opinion, the Coca Cola ads speak as much to children as to adults, and always remain in the spirit of magic, dreams and sharing that Christmas brings.

I'd love to hear your feedback on the Christmas ads: do you prefer them to be funny, childish or more emotional?
